The Power of Fuel

May 01, 2019 - Deciding to go for a long swim and then immediately into a run, FASTED? Do you think this will burn fat or help shed those extra pounds? Well, we are here to encourage you to think again. Fueling before, after, during and between longer workouts is critical to your success as an athlete.  When you workout for too long of a duration fasted, you are putting yourself at risk for impaired performance.


Deciding to go for a long swim and then immediately into a run, FASTED? Do you think this will burn fat or help shed those extra pounds? Well, we are here to encourage you to think again. Fueling before, after, during and between longer workouts is critical to your success as an athlete.  When you workout for too long of a duration fasted, you are putting yourself at risk for impaired performance. A study published by the Journal of the International Sports Society examined 20 women, 10 who exercised first thing in the morning fasted and 10 who exercised after eating a meal. This study showed that neither group experienced more weight loss than the other.1 In addition to being ineffective for weight loss, it is important to keep in mind that athletes are at a much higher risk for eating disorders than the general population.2 Fasting may lead to overeating later and disordered eating habits, later on, supporting that this is not a healthy, balanced or effective approach to fueling. Another study that examined a group of men cycling in a fasted state showed significantly reduced aerobic endurance!3 Therefore, if you want to excel during a workout you need to fuel your body.
